Why Visit Sheboygan?
If you've never considered visiting Sheboygan, you're definitely not alone. I almost overlooked it myself.
What surprised me most wasn't just the beaches or the restaurants. It was how much variety fits into such a compact destination.
In one weekend, we explored world-class art museums, hiked through sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan, ate at restaurants I'd happily revisit, and never spent much time driving between attractions.
Compared to some of Wisconsin's busier tourist destinations, Sheboygan offers the perfect mix of beaches, attractions, and restaurants while still feeling refreshingly relaxed.
Explore the One-of-a-Kind John Michael Kohler Arts Center & Art Preserve
One of the most unique things to do in Sheboygan attractions is to visit the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and the nearby Art Preserve.
Even if you don't consider yourself an “art person,” don't skip this stop; it ended up being one of the biggest surprises of my trip.
Unlike a traditional art museum, where you'll see a handful of pieces by many different artists, the Art Preserve showcases entire collections by self-taught artists.
Walking through each exhibit feels like stepping into the artist's world, giving you a much deeper appreciation for their creativity and the stories behind their work.
I especially enjoyed seeing the incredibly detailed sculptures and installations throughout the museum.

The chicken bone exhibit completely stopped me in my tracks. I walked into the gallery expecting paintings and sculptures, then suddenly found myself staring at incredibly intricate sculptures created almost entirely from chicken bones.
It was one of those moments where I actually laughed out loud because I couldn't believe someone had the imagination (or patience) to create something so detailed.
Pro Tip: Don't rush through the museum, and definitely don't skip the restrooms on the first and third floors. It may sound like an odd recommendation, but they're works of art in their own right and ended up being one of the most unexpected highlights of our visit.
Plan to spend at least two hours exploring both buildings if you want to take your time and fully appreciate everything on display.
Wander Through the Storybook Scenes at Bookworm Gardens
Bookworm Gardens is one of those attractions that's just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids. This botanical garden brings beloved children's books to life through beautifully designed gardens and interactive displays, making it a fun stop even if you aren't traveling with little ones.
I wasn't expecting Bookworm Gardens to be one of my favorite stops, but it surprised me. Every few minutes, I'd round another corner and recognize a childhood book recreated as an entire garden.
It felt a little nostalgic without being overly touristy, and I found myself slowing down much more than I expected.

While many of the favorite exhibits remain from year to year, the staff continually refreshes the gardens. It introduces a new featured book each season, giving visitors a reason to come back again.
Whether you're looking for a peaceful morning stroll, a unique family activity, or simply a beautiful place to slow down for an hour or two, Bookworm Gardens is well worth adding to your Sheboygan itinerary.
Pro Tip: Allow yourself plenty of time to explore. The gardens are filled with small details that are easy to miss if you rush through, and they're one of those places where you'll want to stop often for photos.
Spend Time at Kohler-Andrae State Park
If you're looking to experience the natural beauty of Lake Michigan, don't miss Kohler-Andrae State Park. With miles of sandy shoreline, rolling dunes, and scenic hiking trails, it's easy to see why this is one of Wisconsin's most popular state parks.
One of my favorite views was from the second-floor observation deck at the Sanderling Nature Center.
Standing on the observation deck, I had to remind myself I was still in Wisconsin. With nothing but dunes and blue water stretching toward the horizon.
If someone had shown me a photo without telling me where it was, I never would have guessed Wisconsin.

After taking in the view, we explored several of the nearby trails. Some sections feature elevated boardwalks that make walking through the dunes much easier while also helping protect the fragile ecosystem.
The park is a relaxing place to slow down, enjoy nature, and take in the peaceful sounds of the waves.
Families visiting the park should also stop inside the nature center to pick up a Junior Explorer workbook. Kids can complete activities as they explore the park and earn a patch after sharing their completed workbook with the staff!
It's a fun way to keep younger visitors engaged while learning about the area's wildlife and natural history.

Pro Tip: Visit in the morning or later in the afternoon for cooler temperatures, softer light for photography, and a quieter experience on the beach. Don't forget comfortable walking shoes if you plan to explore the trails and dunes.
Stay at Blue Harbor Resort on the Shores of Lake Michigan
If you're planning a weekend in Sheboygan, Blue Harbor makes an excellent home base.
Located right on the shores of Lake Michigan, the resort offers beautiful lake views while keeping you within walking distance of many downtown attractions, restaurants, and shops.
From the moment we pulled into the entrance, I was impressed. The resort has a grand appearance from the outside, but once we stepped inside, it felt warm and welcoming.

Every staff member we encountered greeted us with a smile, making us feel right at home throughout our stay.
One of my favorite parts of the property was the easy access to the waterfront. Be sure to wake up early one morning and walk out along the nearby breakwall to watch the sunrise.
With the lighthouse in the foreground and Lake Michigan stretching to the horizon, it was one of the most memorable photo opportunities of the trip.
The resort itself has plenty to keep families entertained. Originally built as a Great Wolf Lodge, Blue Harbor still features an impressive indoor water park complete with water slides, a lazy river, hot tubs, and play areas for kids.

There's also miniature golf, evening bonfires where you can purchase s'mores kits, and a well-equipped fitness center that even includes free weights, something I don't always find at hotels.
We also enjoyed dinner at the Beacon Restaurant inside the resort. The Summer Salad with grilled chicken was fresh and flavorful, and since no trip to Wisconsin feels complete without cheese curds, we had to order those too.
Later that evening, we relaxed with drinks at On the Rocks Bar while enjoying views of Lake Michigan. It was a perfect way to end a day of sightseeing.
Whether you're traveling as a couple, with friends, or bringing the whole family, Blue Harbor Resort offers the convenience of staying close to Sheboygan's top attractions while giving you plenty of reasons to spend time at the resort itself.
If you're visiting for a weekend, I'd absolutely stay here again. Being able to walk to the lakefront each morning, enjoy the resort amenities after sightseeing, and avoid driving back across town made the extra convenience worth it.
Eat Your Way Around Sheboygan
One of the biggest surprises of my visit was just how many fantastic Sheboygan restaurants there are. Whether you're craving an old-fashioned diner breakfast, wood-fired pizza, oversized sandwiches, or locally made chocolates, there's something for every appetite.
Here are a few of my favorite places to eat during my stay.
Harry's Diner
For breakfast, hop aboard Sheboygan's local trolley and head to Harry's Diner. This fun 1950s-style diner feels like stepping back in time, complete with Elvis memorabilia covering the walls and servers dressed in retro attire.

The menu offers plenty of classic breakfast favorites along with a few Elvis-inspired creations, including peanut butter and banana combinations for fans of The King.
Whether you're in the mood for a hearty breakfast before a day of sightseeing or just want to soak up the nostalgic atmosphere, Harry's is a great way to start your morning.
The friendly service and vintage charm made this one of my favorite breakfast stops in Sheboygan, and it's easy to see why both locals and visitors keep coming back.
Frankie's Restaurant
If you leave Sheboygan hungry after eating at Frankie's, you've accomplished something impressive. This local favorite is known for serving sandwiches that are almost comically large.
I ordered the half sandwich, thinking it would be the sensible choice. When it arrived, I actually laughed because it was bigger than many full sandwiches I've ordered elsewhere.
If you're a bacon lover, don't miss the famous BLT, which comes piled high with nearly a pound of bacon.

Feeling adventurous? Frankie's is also home to the legendary 5.5-pound burger challenge, a feat that only a handful of people have completed.
Whether you're looking for a hearty lunch or just want to experience one of Sheboygan's iconic local restaurants, Frankie's is well worth the stop.
Il Ritrovo
For dinner, we enjoyed one of the best meals of the trip at Il Ritrovo, a wood-fired pizzeria that's earned AVPN (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana) certification for authentic Neapolitan pizza.
Pizza lovers travel from all over to experience the restaurant's traditional cooking methods and incredible flavors. We ordered one of the classic Neapolitan pizzas, and after the first bite, I immediately understood why people drive hours just to eat here.
The crust had that perfect combination of chewy and lightly charred that I've only experienced at a handful of certified Neapolitan pizzerias.

The menu features a variety of classic red and white pizzas made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. Before our meal, we were served warm bread with olive oil, a simple touch that set the tone for an outstanding dining experience.
Save room for dessert! The gelato is delicious, and the tiramisu is one of the restaurant's most popular choices.
Pro Tip: Before you leave, take a peek at the cheese cellar in the basement. A section of the glass floor lets you look down into the aging room, making for a unique surprise that many visitors overlook.
Eb & Flo
Just across the street from Blue Harbor Resort, Eb & Flo is the perfect place to fuel up before another day of exploring Sheboygan.
The star of the menu is the Croffle, a creative combination of a flaky croissant and a crispy waffle. Available in both sweet and savory varieties, it's every bit as delicious as it is Instagram-worthy.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but after my first bite, I completely understood why it's one of their signature items.
The café has a warm, cozy atmosphere inside, while the outdoor patio features fire pits that make it a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast or a coffee on cooler mornings.
Sly's Midtown Saloon
If you're looking for an authentic local experience, make time for Sly's Midtown Saloon. This neighborhood favorite is famous for its Double Brat, making it a great stop if you want to sample one of Wisconsin's signature foods.

The sides were memorable as well. The baked beans were unlike any I'd had before, served with a generous spoonful of butter that added a rich, comforting flavor. The homemade potato salad was another standout and paired perfectly with the brat.
With its casual atmosphere and loyal local following, Sly's is exactly the kind of place I love discovering while traveling.
Victorian Chocolate Shoppe
No trip to Sheboygan is complete without satisfying your sweet tooth at Victorian Chocolate Shoppe.
As soon as you walk through the door, you're greeted by the incredible aroma of fresh chocolate. While the shop is best known for its chocolate-covered raspberries, everything I sampled was delicious.

Choosing what to buy was probably the hardest part of the visit. Luckily, I had picked up some goodies, since my flight home was delayed multiple times. The chocolate-covered pretzels were a great snack!
Whether you're picking up a gift or simply treating yourself, this charming chocolate shop is the perfect way to end a day of exploring downtown Sheboygan.
Plan the Perfect Weekend in Sheboygan
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a weekend road trip with friends, Sheboygan has more than enough to fill two relaxing days along the shores of Lake Michigan.
If I were planning my first trip again, this is exactly how I'd spend a weekend in Sheboygan.
Day 1: Art, Lake Views & Amazing Pizza
Start your morning with breakfast at Harry's Diner before heading to the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and Art Preserve. Plan to spend a few hours exploring the fascinating exhibits, and don't forget to check out the artistic restrooms on the first and third floors.
In the afternoon, wander through downtown Sheboygan's locally owned shops before checking into Blue Harbor Resort. If time allows, take a walk along the breakwall to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the nearby lighthouse.
Wrap up your evening with dinner at Il Ritrovo, where authentic wood-fired pizza and homemade gelato make for the perfect ending to your first day.

Day 2: Gardens, Beaches & Local Favorites
Begin your day with breakfast at Eb & Flo and treat yourself to one of their famous Croffles before heading to Bookworm Gardens for a relaxing stroll through the storybook-inspired gardens.
Next, spend a few hours at Kohler-Andrae State Park exploring the hiking trails, climbing the observation deck, and walking along the miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline.
Before heading home, stop for lunch at Frankie's Restaurant if you're craving a massive sandwich or if you're feeling brave enough to tackle the famous burger challenge.
Finish your visit with a stop at Victorian Chocolate Shoppe to pick up a few sweet treats for the drive home.
If you still have room, grab an ice cream from South Pier Parlor and snap a photo at the nearby oversized ice cream cone selfie station before saying goodbye to Sheboygan.
