We did a tour, and the Gothic architecture is amazing, and the history is interesting.

The Reformatory was also the backdrop for “The Shawshank Redemption.” This historic site offers guided tours that transport you into the lives of past inmates.

Walk the halls, explore the cells, and listen to chilling tales of the penitentiary's history.

Whether you're a fan of the paranormal or interested in exploring the darker side of Ohio's past, the Ohio State Reformatory is a place where reality and mystique converge.

Resting Place of the Giants

Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is a testament to the grandeur of the American Country Estate era, standing as one of the nation's finest examples of Tudor Revival architecture.

Built between 1912 and 1915 for F.A. Seiberling, co-founder of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, and his family, this magnificent estate spans 70 acres.

It features a historic 65-room manor house, a conservatory, and beautifully landscaped gardens and grounds.

Step back in time and experience the luxury and craftsmanship of the early 20th century with guided tours that explore the manor's intricacies, the stories of the Seiberling family, and the estate's role in American history.

The gardens, each meticulously designed to reflect different themes and styles, offer a peaceful retreat and a feast for the senses. Stan Hywet showcases the beauty and elegance of a period where detail and design reign supreme.

We toured the estate in the fall season and had a great time! It is definitely worth a few hours of time. We also learned a lot about the family business!

Marblehead Lighthouse

It is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the United States side of the Great Lakes (1821). Explore the lighthouse and the surrounding park – both offer amazing views of Lake Erie and the Sandusky Bay.

The Marblehead Lighthouse also features a museum in the keeper's house, which provides insights into the life of a lighthouse keeper and the history of this iconic structure. Climb to the top of the lighthouse for a unique view!

There are many great places along Lake Erie if you want to make a road trip adventure and visit some small coastal towns or explore an island! Consider stops at Catawba Island State Park, Kelleys Island, Port Clinton, or Put-in-Bay.

Loveland Castle (Château Laroche)

Loveland Castle, or Château Laroche, is a medieval-style castle nestled on the banks of the Little Miami River.

It was built single-handedly by Harry Andrews, a medievalist and World War I veteran, who started its construction in the 1920s.

Inspired by European castles and his dreams, Andrews used stones from the river, bricks, and hand-mixed cement to bring his vision to life. The castle is open to the public and invites you to step into a storybook world.

You can explore the castle's intricate architecture, secret passageways, and beautiful gardens, which mirror those of ancient European estates. The castle also houses an extensive collection of medieval weapons and armor.

Dayton's Aviation Trail

Experience the pioneering spirit of flight on Dayton's Aviation Trail, a journey through the history of aviation in the city that gave birth to the Wright brothers' dreams of flying.

This self-guided trail leads you through key historical sites, including the Wright Brothers National Museum at Carillon Historical Park, Huffman Prairie Flying Field, and the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center.

This park is one of our favorite places to visit in Ohio! Last time, I went a little photo crazy and used up all the space on my camera's SD card, so I had to resort to my phone for photos!

Be sure to explore the towering Old Man's Cave, with its picturesque waterfall cascading into the gorge below.

Hike to Ash Cave, the largest recess cave in the state, and wander along the scenic trails throughout the park.

Whether hiking or rock climbing, the Hocking Hills region offers an unrivaled escape.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a hidden gem between Cleveland and Akron. This urban oasis encompasses forests, the winding Cuyahoga River, and historic landmarks.

Start your visit at one of the Cuyahoga Valley visitor centers. Then, consider hopping aboard the scenic Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, meandering along the Towpath Trail, or strolling to the picturesque Brandywine Falls.

There is plenty to do at the park. One of our favorite things is to bike along the towpath trail and hop on the train with our bikes for a return trip to where we started!

The Holden Arboretum

The Holden Arboretum is one of the largest arboreta and botanical gardens in the United States. This natural paradise in northeast Ohio spans over 3,600 acres and offers gardens, forests, and meadows to explore.

Highlights include the Murch Canopy Walk, a 500-foot-long elevated walkway that provides a bird's-eye view of the forest below, and the Kalberer Emergent Tower, which rises above the trees for breathtaking panoramic views.

Mohican-Memorial State Forest

Nestled in the heart of Ohio's scenic countryside (between Columbus and Cleveland. It is easily reached from I-71 and State Routes 97 and 3), the Mohican-Memorial State Forest covers 4,500 acres of breathtaking natural beauty.

This forest is a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. There are plenty of recreational activities, and hiking enthusiasts can explore miles of trails.

If you're looking for something more exciting, try the mountain biking trails or the nearby Mohican River's canoeing and kayaking opportunities.

The forest also has a rich history, highlighted by the Memorial Shrine, which honors Ohio's servicemen and women.
